Cheese In A Box

Monastery cheese with holes

Kloosterkaas met oogje is an artisanal, often handmade Dutch cheese that owes its name to its shape and appearance. It’s a small, round, semi-soft cheese with a characteristic “oogje” (little eye) in the center, a gentle dimple or indentation. The cheese has an edible, lightly washed or natural rind, and a creamy, sometimes mildly piquant interior. The flavor varies by producer, but is typically mild, full-bodied and lightly nutty, with soft milky notes and a subtle hint of herbs.

  • Origin: The Netherlands (various regional producers, inspired by monastic traditions)

  • Milk type: Usually cow’s milk (sometimes pasteurized)

  • Texture: Semi-soft, creamy to slightly supple

  • Flavor: Mild, full and creamy, lightly herbal or floral

  • Rind: Lightly washed or natural rind, edible
